Isane 2, sequel to a well-known game, offers a number of innovations in the off-road racing genre. Besides the traditional time trial mode, the game features 9 other game modes, including the popular “Capture the flag”, “Gate hunt” and “Pathfinder”, as well as some new competitions, such as bonus hunting, territory control and helicopter pursuit. All of these modes are also available in multiplayer, with up to eight players participating simultaneously.

More than one hundred and fifty races combined into championships and cup competitions take place in Europe, America, Africa and the Antarctic. The game has an enormous variety of long distance tracks: sand and snowy deserts, high-speed roads and impassable cross-country paths, African beaches and deserted Antarctic stations.
The game features 18 vehicles of different classes, from buggies to monstrous “Bigfoots”, as well as an additional prototype class. Rating points won in the races can be used to upgrade any of the vehicles, from a selection of 15 running gear, body or engine upgrade alternatives. Each vehicle is furnished with a detailed destruction system. Reaching the end of a course without suffering any losses is an enormous challenge that only a select few are able to accomplish. The opponents, who constantly create extreme situations, aren’t the only danger: players also need to watch out for railway crossings, heavy tanker trucks and even lightning in stormy weather.

Air Show

The high-concept aircraft design reminds me fondly of the Crimson Skies universe — retro prop-powered airplanes with swept wings and multiple propellers. Each has its own unique stats (e.g. armor, speed, acceleration, etc.), allowing them to control differently from one another. Because of this aircraft variety, finding the right plane for the right track and game mode is a welcome challenge. I narrowed down my favorites to the Warbird (for the more competitive modes) and the Speedster Pro2 (for the faster tracks and modes) utilizing the very scientific practice of crashing into the side of a cavern wall. Going down in flames is only a temporary setback, so I felt I could experiment freely.

The six track locations in the game have some nice variety and are full of unique twists, turns, and environmental hazards to avoid like flying through shipwrecks or avoiding avalanches. Every racetrack has the option of flying it in reverse, so technically there are 12 tracks to race on in the game across the three game modes; a sufficient amount for a game like this. Exploring every path is strongly encouraged by the speed boost meter that refills to reward daring maneuvers — the closer I raced to the ground or the edge of a canyon wall, the faster the meter charged, and the faster my plane could go.

The Mario Kart of The Skies

Power Race, Speed Race, and Survivor modes hammer home the arcade vibe for this game. Power Race plays out something like Mario Kart, where you can pick up power-ups like extra armor or dropable mines scattered across the level. That’s nothing new, but Skydrift gives it a cool twist: you have the option to burn any power-up to fill your boost meter for extra speed. When there’s smoke coming out of my engine but I’m only a few yards behind the leader, do I repair my plane or spend it for some boost power? It’s a cool strategic choice that comes up frequently.

Speed Race removes the power-ups and lays out a series of rings that provide a temporary-yet-powerful speed boost when you fly through them. String together a couple of these hoops in a row and SkyDrift gains a frantic pace and sense of speed that starts to feel more like a Wipeout game. Lastly, Survivor mode (one of my favorites) mixes power-ups with a repeating countdown cycle, eliminating whoever sits in last place when the clock strikes zero. This repeats until there is only one remaining airplane. This creates a race of excitement and desperation when I’m jostling for position, dodging bullets, and keeping my eyes on the countdown clock.

Holding Out on Us

The best mode, however, shows up only once and can’t be accessed online. It’s reserved for the final level of the single-player game that (spoiler) combines all three modes into one crazy-awesome race full of power-ups, speed hoops, and elimination. It’s a shame that it’s not available anywhere else, because for one solid level SkyDrift is absolute chaotic bliss. If nothing else, it could’ve been a great end-game unlockable that could be accessed on the other maps in the game.

Speaking of limited options, it’s frustrating that there’s no way to create a custom race against the A.I. — that’s reserved only for online races. This wouldn’t be so bad if I could find a full lobby of players, but on average I’ve only been able to play against two or three other people at a time. SkyDrift just isn’t attracting a large enough audience to fill games. At least when an online game does get up and running it’s been a fairly smooth and lag-free experience for me.

Turn For the Worse

And then there are bits that lack polish, like failing to change the button prompts when a gamepad is plugged in, and odd, unintuitive controls that don’t follow your plane’s orientation when you rotate into a 90-degree “knife edge” position (essential for making tight turns). When up suddenly becomes right and down becomes left, you have to relearn how to pull up. There’s no logical reason for this, and there’s no way to fix it from the menu. It’s an especially odd and irritating control decision for anyone who’s ever played a flight sim.

Controls and lonliness issues aside, I did enjoy most of my time with SkyDrift. It’s a well-produced budget racing game with a wide variety of racetracks, and a nice change of pace that doesn’t involve dragons or terrorists. Just make sure to try the demo first to be certain you can handle the control weirdness
